Is Tritan plastic safe to drink wine from?
By Kirsty Cook, Govino SA · Updated · 2 min read
Short answer: Yes. Eastman, the maker of Tritan™, states the material contains no BPA, BPS or any other bisphenol and shows no estrogenic or androgenic activity in independent tests. It is cleared for food contact by regulators including the US FDA and EU authorities. Tritan is also taste- and odour-neutral, so wine in a Govino Shatterproof Wine glass tastes like wine.
Does Tritan contain BPA?
No. BPA (bisphenol A) is used to make polycarbonate, the hard clear plastic of older water-cooler bottles and some catering tumblers. Tritan is a different polymer family, a copolyester, and bisphenols have never been part of its chemistry. Eastman has published independent test results confirming it is free of BPA and BPS.
Is "BPA-free" plastic always safe?
Not automatically. Some "BPA-free" products swap BPA for close relatives like BPS. That's why the specific material matters. Tritan is free of the whole bisphenol family, not just BPA. If a plastic glass doesn't tell you what it's made of, ask.
Can you put hot drinks in Tritan?
Tritan handles hot dishwasher water, but Govino glasses are designed for cold and room-temperature drinks: wine, bubbles, beer, spirits, iced coffee. Don't use them for boiling liquids, or in the microwave or oven.
Does Tritan affect the taste of wine?
No. Tritan doesn't absorb odours or leach flavour. What does affect taste is shape. Govino's bowl tapers to concentrate aroma like a wine glass, which a straight-sided cup can't do. More on that: does wine taste different in a plastic glass?
